Niche Blogging - Why Choose a Niche?

Niche Blogging Beats the Tar out of General Blogging. Let’s face it, while it’s a dandy idea to write a blog about “everything” under the sun, it’s not going to be a great money maker. There are many blogs out there that focus on many different subjects. When blogging for personal reasons, it is usually not a problem to cover nearly every topic under the sun. When blogging for commercial or professional purposes, it is important to focus on a tight niche area that has an interested pool of potential readers, and a interesting subject matter to post about. Many first time bloggers make the decision that their blog will be what is called a general blog. Rut-roh! Don’t fall into this trap. If you want to learn how to make a blog that makes money, avoid making a general blog.

What is a general blog? A blog without focus…plain and simple.

A general blog is unfocused and is not targeted at a specific readership. While it may in fact be easier to write for a general blog, seeing as there is an unlimited amount of subjects to cover, it is in fact harder for the blog to become a success. When a blog reader comes across an interesting blog post on a general blog, they will then look for related subjects or further in-depth information.

Disappointment will quickly set in as there will be no further information available. They will then leave and most likely never come back. People are busy, and aren’t looking to read about what you had for lunch yesterday, and to find out that you like the color yellow because it makes you happy, oh and guess what - you talked to your cousin who you haven’t talked to in like 3 years, and isn’t that super duper awesome?

A general blog may be able to achieve a certain level of initial traffic, but it won’t be able to keep repeat readers because they will be finding the information they are seeking from a reliable niche blog that fulfills their needs.

When niche blogging, you’ll be focusing on one subject, exploring it fully, and updating the blog with new information that relates to it. This type of blog can still attract initial traffic, but then goes on to satisfy the reader with follow-up information, additional facts, feedback opportunities, and constant updates. This type of blog environment is exactly what most readers look for, whether they know it or not.

Running a general blog is a recipe for failure. Those new to blogging may be tempted by it, but they should still take the steps to research a niche that they can then build a quality blog around. This will insure their long term success and avoid a time consuming, and sometimes expensive, mistake that many make when they first start out blogging. Let’s face it, niche blogging beats the tar out of general blogging when it comes to making money.
